Brady Statement on SunTrust Bank Shooting

Washington, D.C., January 23, 2019 - Today, at least five people were shot and killed during a hostage situation at a SunTrust Bank in Sebring, FL, a tragedy described by local law enforcement as a “senseless criminal doing a senseless crime.” While much about the shooting has not been made public, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence released the following statement, expressing outrage at yet another mass shooting in America.

Kris Brown, president of the Brady Campaign, stated,

“Innocent people were shot dead today while going about their daily lives because a dangerous person used a deadly firearm. Once again, we are left with a tragic example of how gun violence can destroy a community. We call on law enforcement and all those investigating and reporting on this tragedy to examine not just why the shooter acted as he did, but to determine how he obtained his gun and what steps could have been taken to prevent these murders. If we want to properly honor the memories of those killed today - not just the five in Sebring, but the 96 people shot and killed every day in America - we owe it to them to trace the paths by which guns fall into the wrong hands and ensure that those pathways are closed. Gun violence does not have to be how our country is defined - we’d far rather be defined by our solutions to the issue.”
