Washington, D.C., October 27, 2019 — As many as 14 people have been injured and two killed in a shooting at a Texas A&M University-Commerce off-campus party. The shooting occurred late Saturday evening as the university was celebrating homecoming weekend. While details about the incident are still unfolding and the shooter(s) remain at large, Brady encourages law enforcement to consider how the gunman obtained the weapon in addition to the usual question of why the shooting occurred.
Brady President, Kris Brown stated,
“Today, on the one year anniversary of the Tree of Life shooting, we woke up to more tragedy. While Sen. Mitch McConnel and Donald Trump continue to make excuses, claiming impeachment hearings are prohibiting them from addressing gun reform, more and more Americans die. An America where you can’t celebrate homecoming or walk down the street without the fear of being shot is not a “great” America. Sen. Cornyn, whose home state has seen horrific levels of gun violence in recent months, has identified some of the core issues that drive gun violence in the U.S., yet his recent proposal does little to actually address the very issues he identifies. It’s time our leaders in Congress prioritize the safety of the people they have sworn to represent.”
Texas has experienced a string of mass shootings in recent months, including the tragedy in El Paso that killed 22 and injured more than 20 and the shooting in Odessa where seven people were killed and more than 20 injured. Additionally, the shooting came on the eve of the one-year anniversary of the national tragedy in Pittsburgh where eleven people were killed and 6 injured at the Tree of Life Synagogue, and less than two weeks before Texas honors the two-year anniversary of the shooting at a Sutherland Springs church. Yet time and again, nothing is done to prevent future loss of life.
More than 3,000 Texans are killed annually by gun violence and even more wounded. The state does not require background checks on private sales, nor does it have an extreme risk law in place to allow a path for intervention when threats are perceived. Texas also does not have a ban on assault weapons or large-capacity magazines. Texans deserve a safer state and safer communities. If the Senate refuses to take action, then voters will need to make their dissatisfaction known at the polls. As Sarah Brady frequently said, if you can’t change the laws, then change the lawmakers.
