Brady Applauds Signage of Michigan Extreme Risk Protection Order Bill

New law will prevent people in crisis from harming themselves or others.

Washington, D.C., May 22, 2023 – Today, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed into law an extreme risk protection order bill to give law enforcement and family members a tool to temporarily remove firearms from those who are at risk of harming themselves or others. . Brady, the oldest national gun violence prevention organization, has endorsed and worked alongside state lawmakers and local partners, on this vital legislation.

Brady President Kris Brown stated:

"After an instance of gun violence, we are often left wondering what could have prevented this tragedy from happening. Mass shooters and individuals who take their lives often exhibit warning signs, and extreme risk laws are pivotal for enabling intervention when those patterns are present.

“Extreme risk laws are proven to work, and with this law, Michiganaders will be more protected against gun violence. Brady applauds Gov. Whitmer for signing this bill into law, and thanks all bill sponsors and champions for helping to pass this key preventative measure.”
