Washington, D.C., May 30, 2023 – This Memorial Day weekend, three people were killed and five others were injured in a mass shooting in Red River, N.M. and nine people were injured in a mass shooting in Hollywood, Fla. Both incidents began as altercations that turned deadly due to gunfire. There have been 263 mass shootings so far this year. Brady, the country’s oldest gun violence prevention organization, released the following statement:
Kris Brown, president of Brady, said:
“This will continue to be our reality until the U.S. changes its relationship with guns and our lawmakers no longer answer to the gun industry.”
“Laws like permitless concealed carry allow everyday altercations and conflicts like these to turn deadly quickly. And unfortunately many states, including Florida, are going backward, and putting our communities at even greater risk by making it easier for people who shouldn’t have guns to own and carry them.”
