Brady Endorses Pelosi, Hoyer, Clyburn for House Leadership

Washington, D.C., November 16, 2018 - Today, the nation’s oldest and most effective gun safety organization endorsed Leader Nancy Pelosi for Speaker of the House, as well as Rep. Steny Hoyer for House Majority Leader and Rep. Jim Clyburn for House Majority Whip. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence cited Pelosi’s long history of leadership on gun reform issues, making it clear she is the single most qualified person to shepard critical legislation in the upcoming Congress.

Kris Brown, co-president of the Brady Campaign, stated,

“Nancy Pelosi has been there for us every step of the way, without question. She was there for Jim and Sarah Brady, she has been there for our survivors, she has been there for our grassroots activists, and she has been there for our ongoing gun safety legislation push for as long as she has been a member of Congress. This year, after Parkland, Leader Pelosi strongly supported the Brady Three Point Plan, common sense solutions that will reduce gun violence in our country, and worked with Congressional candidates across the country to incorporate those priorities into their campaigns. Now that our gun safety Congress is finally upon us, there is no one else who we would trust more to bring these bills over the finish line and gain support from all members of Congress on this critical issue. She has our complete, unqualified support, and we look forward to working with Speaker Pelosi to advance a gun violence prevention agenda in Congress.

“Furthermore, Steny Hoyer and Jim Clyburn have been committed leaders on gun safety throughout their tenures, helping elevate the issue and make it the top priority among the electorate that it is today. Their proven leadership has shown that they can and will push tough issues through a divided Congress. We’re proud to endorse them for House leadership and eagerly look forward to their election.”

Kyleanne Hunter, USMC (ret.), and vice president of programs at the Brady Campaign, added,

“When we talk about Nancy Pelosi, we are talking about one of the strongest and most steadfast friends that the gun safety movement has in this country. Leader Pelosi was an original sponsor of the federal assault weapons ban, and has made her support of reviving that legislation today a keystone of her agenda. She has been a longtime advocate for the idea that weapons of war do not belong in places of peace. Veterans have seen firsthand that Leader Pelosi understands the complex nature of guns in our country, and we know that she can be counted on to stand up for American values while protecting American lives. We need steady, proven leadership in Congress, and Nancy Pelosi is the clear choice.”

Throughout her time in Congress, Leader Pelosi has:

  • Cosponsored the Brady Bill in 1993 and multiple assault weapons bans;
  • Participated in the John Lewis-led sit-in protesting gun violence;
  • Invited gun violence survivors to Congress and to the State of the Union;
  • Led her party to become the first gun safety majority in a generation and the most added seats in the House of Representatives since Watergate, despite persistent and personal opposition attacks against her character.

The Brady Campaign endorsed 60 candidates for the House of Representatives in 2018, with 50 winning their elections. 26 are new members, including Rep.-elect Katie Hill (D-CA), who released a letter this week strongly supporting Leader Pelosi for Speaker.

Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence. We work across Congress, the courts, and our communities with over 90 grassroots chapters, bringing together young and old, red and blue, and every shade of color to find common ground in common sense. In the spirit of our namesakes Jim and Sarah Brady, we have fought for over 45 years to take action, not sides, and we will not stop until this epidemic ends. It’s in our hands.
