Washington, D.C., April 26, 2019 — Speaking at the annual meeting of the National Rifle Association today in Indianapolis, President Donald Trump announced that he and his administration “will never ratify” the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty, a global treaty aimed at making it more difficult to sell weapons in violation of arms embargoes. Brady, which has been a leading voice against the Trump administration’s efforts to reduce oversight on firearms exports, denounced the decision as being dangerously shortsighted and reckless.

Brady president Kris Brown stated,

“Today, President Trump chose to pander to the corporate gun lobby and shirk his responsibility to his country and the world. We should be doing everything in our power to stop gun violence, not export it. The Arms Trade Treaty is designed to keep guns out of war-stricken countries and prevent dangerous situations from descending even further into chaos. It is a treaty supported by our allies, but in opposing it, the president instead chose to stand with countries such as North Korea and Syria. By denouncing the treaty today, President Trump will only embolden terrorists and other dangerous actors around the world. This is a dangerous, reckless move that will endanger countless Americans and other innocent people worldwide.”

Earlier this year, the Trump Administration announced that they would move forward with a rule that would transfer oversight of American gunmakers selling deadly weapons - including military-style assault weapons - internationally from the State Department to the Commerce Department. Brady previously submitted public comments urging against the rule. Brady is also supporting the Prevent Crime and Terrorism Act in Congress to block the Administration’s proposal.

Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence. We work across Congress, the courts, and our communities with over 90 grassroots chapters, bringing together young and old, red and blue, and every shade of color to find common ground in common sense. In the spirit of our namesakes Jim and Sarah Brady, we have fought for over 45 years to take action, not sides, and we will not stop until this epidemic ends. It’s in our hands.
