Brady Colorado Calls for Action Following Mass Shooting in Colorado Springs

Denver, Colorado, May 10, 2021 - Following the mass shooting in Colorado Springs on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 9, 2021, Brady Colorado calls on lawmakers to act to prevent gun violence at without delay.

Gun Violence Survivor, Colorado Resident and Brady Vice President of Organizing Maisha Fields shared:

“For the second time in under two months our state is again mourning victims of a mass shooting, by some measures the fourth deadliest mass shooting in Colorado history. We cannot accept this continued gun violence in our state and in our communities. My life and my family’s lives have never been the same since my brother, Javad, and his fiancée Vivian were killed. The families who lost loved ones this weekend will now face a similar journey - a reminder that our state cannot rest until we pass meaningful gun violence prevention legislation. Our political leaders must act and prioritize this issue. Too many lives have been lost already, but we can stop further bloodshed now.”

Brady Colorado State Lead Val Beck shared:

“Our state awoke on Sunday, Mother’s Day, to news of a mass shooting that killed six people, less than two months after the mass shooting in Boulder that galvanized Coloradans to once again pay attention to our nation’s gun violence epidemic. Our state’s lawmakers must act.Gun violence is everywhere, the grocery store, our neighborhoods and at a family birthday party. Families are grieving today, but everyone present at this party will be traumatized for the rest of their lives. More details on this shooting will be released, but the Colorado General Assembly must act now. There are multiple proposed bills working their way through the legislature that are evidence-based and will stop gun violence in our state. These bills will help save lives. The General Assembly must make them laws.”

About the Shooting at Colorado Springs:

On Sunday, May 9, a gunman opened fire on a birthday party in Colorado Springs, Colorado, killing six adults and injuring one adult man. The shooter was reportedly the boyfriend of one of the victims and later died by suicide at the scene. While motive and details about the shooting will continue to emerge, victims, including the families of those killed and the children who witnessed the shooting, will be forced to deal with the trauma from the event for years to come.

About Brady’s Polling in Colorado:

Just before the 2020 election, Brady and Public Policy Polling surveyed Colorado voters. This poll showed yet again that Colorado voters like the overwhelming majority of Americans want and support common-sense gun violence prevention policies. Results from this poll show that of Colorado voters:

  • 70 percent support a policy that would require background checks to buy ghost gun kits, while only two in ten oppose such a measure.

  • Two-thirds, 66 percent, support a waiting period for gun purchases

  • 62 percent support Congress passing a universal background check law, double those who oppose such a law.

  • Over six in ten, 61 percent, support the state’s recently enacted Extreme Risk Law, sometimes referred to as a “red flag” law

  • 56 percent are more likely to vote for a candidate who supports universal background checks on all gun transactions
