Washington, D.C., July 12, 2022 - Today, Brady celebrates California Governor Gavin Newsom for signing AB 1594, a bill to create legal pathways to hold the firearm industry accountable for its role in fueling gun violence. This bill creates a predicate exception to the federal Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, which has stopped numerous civil lawsuits against the firearms industry for dangerous or negligent businesses practices that foreseeably resulted in gun violence.Brady President Kris Brown shared:“This is a historic day; this law makes California only one of four states to create new legal avenues to pursue civil lawsuits against the firearms industry which have for too long been stopped by the federal Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act. This is a common-sense bill that will allow Californians to find justice through our legal system and create a powerful incentive for the firearm industry to adopt needed reforms and common-sense safeguards that will save lives.
