Washington D.C., January 23, 2018— Today's school shooting, the third in the past two days, is one of the most terrifying aspects of America's gun violence epidemic. In 2017, 132 people were killed or injured in school and university shootings, yet Congress and the president have made it even easier for dangerous people to buy guns. In the aftermath of today's tragedy, which left two children dead and 17 injured, Representative James Comer was quick to respond with thoughts and prayers. But his constituents, and all Americans, demand more than thoughts and prayers from their elected officials. What they got instead, from Rep. Comer, were two votes in the last year to weaken our nation's background check system for gun purchases.
There are sensible steps we can take to reduce gun violence, and they don't implicate the 2nd Amendment. Brady hopes the investigation will reveal how the 15 year old shooter got his gun, as federal law doesn't allow those under 18 to have handguns. In 68 percent of school shootings, the shooters get their guns from a relative.
