Washington, D.C., October 22, 2018 – Yesterday in Jacksonville, FL, six people were wounded in a street shooting, three critically. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence released the following statement, noting the state’s repeated high-profile gun issues and the opportunity voters have to change that legacy.

“For too long, Florida has been known as the ‘Gunshine State,’ a regrettable if well-deserved nickname,” stated Avery Gardiner, co-president of the Brady Campaign. “From the gun lobby’s vicelike grip on the state’s elected officials to the repeated mass shootings seen across the state, Florida carries a reputation that any state would do its utmost to avoid. Now, six people have been shot in an event so seemingly routine that it barely registered in the nation’s consciousness. In 15 days, though, Florida has a chance to change all that by electing gun safety champions who will defend and promote common sense measures to keep their state safe from reckless gun violence. So go vote, Florida - there’s too much at stake not to.”
