Following today’s tragic shooting in Jacksonville, FL that left three people dead, including the shooter, and 11 others injured, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence released the following statement. Brady Campaign co-presidents Kris Brown and Avery Gardiner stated:

“Once more, we are horrified by a mass shooting. Once more, we mourn the loss of innocent lives and the suffering of the others injured. Once more, we ask why America is the only nation in the developed world in which these attacks occur. Once more, we ask why our nation’s elected officials refuse to take action to keep us safe.

“Americans deserve to be safe, whether at school, a football game, a club, an airport, an art exhibition, a church, a workplace, a concert, or -- as of today -- a gaming tournament. We await the details of this shooter’s plans and how he got his gun, but we already know that far more gun deaths happen every day in America than among any other industrialized nation. We can stop the shootings if we enforce our existing gun laws, including the Brady background check system, and eliminate the gaps in our our nation's laws that make it far too easy for dangerous people to get firearms to use as killing machines.

“We commend local law enforcement for their quick response and look forward to the results of a thorough investigation into this horrific shooting.

“Florida has a primary election on Tuesday. As voters in Florida go to the polls to choose their next Gubernatorial candidate, we hope they prioritize the candidates’ record and stance on common sense laws that prevent gun violence. There are candidates running who are strong and decisive on the issue of gun violence, and candidates who would oversee a system that does nothing to stop dangerous people from accessing guns. Florida deserves leaders who will take action to prevent gun violence and we hope voters keep this issue a top priority at the ballot box on Tuesday.

“The time is now to demand the change we seek. We stand with the voters of Florida as they go to the polls on Tuesday to make that change happen.”

Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence. We work across Congress, the courts, and our communities with over 90 grassroots chapters, bringing together young and old, red and blue, and every shade of color to find common ground in common sense. In the spirit of our namesakes Jim and Sarah Brady, we have fought for over 45 years to take action, not sides, and we will not stop until this epidemic ends. It’s in our hands.
