Washington, D.C., April 22, 2018 - In the hours following a mass shooting this morning at a Nashville Waffle house, more details are emerging on the shooter's criminal background and how he obtained his guns following an arrest last year. Nashville police stated that the U.S. Secret Service worked with Illinois law enforcement to remove the killer's guns after taking him into custody in a restricted area near the White House. However, for reasons unknown, the shooter's father returned those firearms, including the AR-15 used in today's shooting.
Kris Brown, co-president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, stated, "It adds insult to the literal injuries and loss of life suffered by today's victims that even though the killer was known to be too dangerous to have guns, his father chose to rearm him including, reportedly, with the AR-15 used this morning, a weapon of war that now happens to be the weapon of choice in far too many mass killings in America."
Three weeks ago, the NRA asked its members to contact Tennessee legislators in opposition to bills that would ban bump stocks, enable "extreme risk" protective orders to temporarily remove guns from people in crisis, and raise the age to buy an assault weapon.
Brady co-president Avery Gardiner added, "The NRA has been silent about this morning's mass murder at a Tennessee Waffle House, not even offering thoughts and prayers. But three weeks ago, it served up a plea for its members to oppose three common-sense gun bills that would make Tennesseans safer. The NRA is on the wrong side of this debate at both the state and national level, and it is costing lives. We concur with Nashville Mayor David Briley today - enough is enough."
