Washington, D.C., March 14, 2018 - This morning, thousands of students nationwide stood together against gun violence and Congressional inaction as part of the National School Walkout. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence hailed the students who took part in more than 2,500 walkouts across the country exactly one month after the tragic shooting in Parkland, FL.
"I couldn't be prouder of the countless students across the country who stood up for what they believed in today - including my own daughter," stated Kris Brown, co-president of the Brady Campaign. "All students, indeed everyone, deserve a future free of fear from gun violence, and it is unacceptable that Congress hasn't even moved forward with the most basic laws to prevent gun violence. The voices of young Americans came through loud and clear today to say that we want and demand action."
Brady is an official partner in the Walkout. It developed a neutral, nonpartisan guide to be used by teachers and school administrators to lead classroom discussions on gun violence. The discussion guide provides a way to engage students before, during, and after the walkout in a way that encourages their thinking and debate on the subject.
"Just days ago, the White House Press Secretary said that President Trump was looking for signs of broad-based support to take some of the most basic actions on gun violence prevention," added Brady co-president Avery Gardiner. "Today's massive student walkout in rural, suburban, and urban schools all across the nation shows that the fervor and commitment around this cause is real. Today should be a wakeup call for all elected officials and to every candidate taking NRA money. The next generation is leading the way, and lawmakers need to follow."
In the days following the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Brady announced a three-point legislative plan to combat gun violence. The plan includes expanding background checks to all gun sales, a ban on assault weapons and high capacity magazines, and enacting "Extreme Risk" laws to keep guns out of the hands of people in crisis.
Brady is committed to working with young people and all Americans in the weeks and months ahead to continue the momentum from the Walkout and upcoming March for Our Lives to make comprehensive gun violence prevention legislation a reality.
