Washington, D.C., February 28, 2018 - Today, Dick's Sporting Goods, one of the largest sellers of guns and ammunition in the United States, announced that it will immediately end sales of assault-style rifles and high capacity magazines in its stores. The Brady Campaign & Center to Prevent Gun Violence applauded the announcement, noting that private industry can play a major role in gun violence prevention without waiting for Congressional action.
"While Congress dithers, private industry acts," stated Brady co-president Avery Gardiner. "Assault weapons are meant for war. We applaud Dick's for valuing human life and showing that with this decision not to sell assault weapons or high capacity magazines. This will save lives."
In addition to stopping sales of assault weapons and high capacity magazines, Dick's announced that it will not sell any guns to customers under the age of 21.
"Gun retailers play a critical role in preventing gun violence, and it is heartening to see this decision today," said Brady co-president Kris Brown. "The voices of young activists in Florida and all over the country played a key role in this decision, and it's clear their voices are making a difference. We need policy changes that improve our background check system, and we also need retailers like Dick's to ensure they do their part to ensure that guns stay out of the hands of dangerous people. We look forward to working with more companies who will follow Dick's lead."
