Washington, D.C., May 30, 2023 – California continues to lead progress by moving forward several strong gun violence bills that will make critical strides in preventing gun violence in the state and surrounding region. The bills addressing concealed carry (SB 2), microstamping (SB 452), and retailer training (SB 241) have all passed in the senate. The assembly has passed the bills relevant to the gun violence prevention tax (AB 28) and manufacturer registration (AB 1089). Brady, the oldest national gun violence prevention organization, sponsored many of these bills and worked alongside state lawmakers, national and local partners, Brady grassroots volunteers, and members of Team ENOUGH on this package.
Brady President Kris Brown stated:
"The state of California continues to showcase its leadership by crafting legislation to address the gun violence epidemic, and as a result, they have one of the lowest rates of firearm deaths in the nation. With the bills moving forward this session, they are one step closer to decreasing violence while increasing safety and stability for all Californians. “Several of these bills aim to address the supply-side of the gun industry with policies that will strengthen microstamping requirements, mandate training for firearm dealers, and crack down on 3-D printed ghost guns. All of these initiatives will ensure weapons are not landing in dangerous hands.
“Weak concealed carry laws pose an extreme risk to communities by allowing guns to lawfully enter public spaces. With SB 2, California will create sensitive place restrictions and ensure that those who are carrying in public are properly vetted and trained, reducing mass shootings and reactive violence.
“To address the systemic causes of gun violence, AB. 28 proposes the state enact a tax on firearms to fund the California Violence Intervention Prevention Grant Program. Investing in education, research, and response techniques is paramount to healing communities impacted by gun violence and will lay the groundwork necessary to prevent further devastation.
“Brady applauds California’s legislators for passing this historic package. With 3 of these bills now through the Senate and 2 bills through the Assembly, the California legislature has the opportunity to continue the Golden State’s exemplary leadership in addressing gun violence in all of its forms. Brady urges both chambers to continue their efforts so these bills make it to the Governor's desk. ”
