Washington, D.C., March 29, 2023 – Today, the Department of Justice (DOJ) released the names and locations of gun dealers whose licenses have been revoked by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The data shows that 88 dealers had their licenses revoked in 2022, and five in the second half of 2021. Brady has long advocated for the release of more detailed information regarding the gun industry and ATF oversight, including through litigation.

Kris Brown, president of Brady, said:

“This increase in transparency of gun industry oversight will help inform the public of negligent and reckless sellers in their communities, and should be a warning to sellers with irresponsible practices.
“This data demonstrates that in under two years, the ATF had adequate cause to revoke the licenses of 93 gun dealers whose business practices have willfully put our families and communities at risk. Without ATF’s authority and oversight, these problematic dealers would still be operating today.
“Most notably, revocations of licenses dramatically increased during President Joe Biden’s second year, showing how strong ATF leadership can hold accountable gun dealers who willfully violated the law and put profit above lives.
Brady’s innovative Gun Store Transparency Project provided the public access to inspection reports for gun stores whose violations resulted in administrative action. A little after a year since the launch of the site, and six years since Brady filed Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests to obtain these federal inspection reports, the Biden administration is now rightfully prioritizing data transparency in order to best understand and stem the flow of crime guns tearing our communities apart.”

Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence. We work across Congress, the courts, and our communities with over 90 grassroots chapters, bringing together young and old, red and blue, and every shade of color to find common ground in common sense. In the spirit of our namesakes Jim and Sarah Brady, we have fought for over 45 years to take action, not sides, and we will not stop until this epidemic ends. It’s in our hands.
