Brady Applauds House Judiciary Committee for Clean Bill Markup Calls on Congress to Immediately Pass Gun Safety Legislation

Washington D.C., September 11, 2019 — Late Tuesday evening, the House Judiciary Committee passed three gun violence prevention bills out of committee, taking one step forward to strengthening the country’s gun laws. Brady applauded the committee for its leadership and swift action in advancing these lifesaving bills through committee.

Brady is now calling on the House of Representatives to immediately bring the bills to a vote and move them on to the Senate to be passed with a simple majority.

Brady President, Kris Brown stated,

“The House Judiciary Committee and Chairman Nadler have exhibited true leadership in passing these bills through committee free of any detrimental amendments. It’s now on the rest of the House of Representatives to show that same leadership by quickly bringing these bills to a vote and getting them to the Senate, on Mitch McConnell’s desk. In our country, 100 Americans are dying each day from gun violence. It does not have to be this way. We can save our fellow Americans from this fate if Mitch McConnell brings these lifesaving measures for a vote. We must demand the Senate take up these bills and pass them with a simple majority; fifty-one is fair. The safety of the American public is in McConnell’s hands. The question is, will he rise to the occasion or once again cower in fear of the gun industry.”

In addition to the bills that passed out of committee Tuesday, Brady calls on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to finally bring legislation to expand background checks to a vote. The bill passed through the House of Representatives nearly 200 days ago.

About the Legislation:

H.R. 1236, the Extreme Risk Protection Order Act of 2019
The “Extreme Risk Protection Order Act,” sponsored by Representative Salud Carbajal (D-CA 24) in the House and Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) in the Senate, establishes a program under the Department of Justice to award grants to states to implement extreme risk laws. Extreme risk laws give family members, law enforcement, and sometimes others like health professionals or school administrators, an avenue to prevent an individual in crisis from harming themselves or others by temporarily removing guns and prohibiting the purchase of firearms.

H.R. 1186, the Keep Americans Safe Act
The Keep Americans Safe Act sponsored by Representative Ted Deutch (D FL-22) and Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ), bans the sale and possession of large-capacity magazines. A large-capacity magazine (LCM) is typically defined as any magazine that is capable of holding more than either 10 or 15 rounds of ammunition. LCMs enable an individual to fire repeatedly without having to reload, which significantly increases a shooter’s ability to injure and kill large numbers of people in short periods of time.

H.R. 2708, the Disarm Hate Act
The Disarm Hate Act sponsored by Representative David Cicilline (D RI-1) and Senator Robert Casey (D-PA), prohibits a person who has been convicted of a misdemeanor hate crime, or received an enhanced sentence for a misdemeanor because of hate or bias, from obtaining or possessing a firearm.

S. 42, the Background Check Expansion Act
On February 27, 2019 the House of Representatives passed H.R. 8 the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 sponsored by Representative Mike Thompson (D CA-5). It’s Senate companion, S. 42 the Background Check Expansion Act, is sponsored by Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) and would expand Brady Background Checks to cover all private firearm sales, including those at gun shows, over the internet, or in classified ads.
