THESE NEW EXECUTIVE ACTIONS WILL HELP ENSURE THAT ALL FEDERAL FIREARM LICENSEES PROPERLY AFFIRM THAT THEY ARE DOING AS THE LAW INTENDS: PROVIDING ACCESS TO SAFE STORAGE AND GUN SAFETY DEVICES AND MATERIALS TO HELP KEEP AMERICANS SAFE.

Washington, D.C., January 4, 2022 - Today, Brady applauds the Biden-Harris Administration for taking new actions via executive authority to address gun violence. Yesterday, the Department of Justice finalized a rule requiring that federal firearm licensees must certify that they have available for purchase safe storage devices compatible with the firearms they offer for sale. This rule addresses the reality that gun dealers are the first line of defense in preventing improper use of firearms, including gun suicide and incidents of family fire. The proper storage of firearms can help reduce both of these incidents of gun violence, keeping families and communities safe. Further, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives released a Best Practices Guide for federal firearms licensees, providing important resources to assist dealers with keeping their customers safe and with complying with their obligations under the law.

Brady President Kris Brown shared:

“This latest action taken by the Biden-Harris Administration builds upon the clear and consistent commitment to gun safety and to preventing gun violence. These actions will help ensure that all federal firearm licensees properly affirm that they are doing as the law intends: providing access to safe storage and gun safety devices and materials to help keep their customers safe. Safely storing firearms is a proven way to prevent gun violence, including in reducing gun suicide which accounts for more than 60 percent of gun deaths every year, as well as incidents of family fire, a shooting involving an improperly stored or misused gun in the home that results in death or injury. These are just the latest actions that the Biden-Harris have taken as part of their ongoing and comprehensive agenda to address gun violence in our country. We are grateful for their leadership.

About This Rule:

The Department of Justice has submitted a final rule to the Federal Register, which will take effect Feb. 3, that requires FFLs to certify that they have secure gun storage devices available to their customers for purchase. As not all devices are compatible with varying types of firearms, this new rule requires that FFLs have available secure gun storage options that are compatible with the firearms they are selling, ensuring that purchasers will have access to these life-saving devices.

Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence. We work across Congress, the courts, and our communities with over 90 grassroots chapters, bringing together young and old, red and blue, and every shade of color to find common ground in common sense. In the spirit of our namesakes Jim and Sarah Brady, we have fought for over 45 years to take action, not sides, and we will not stop until this epidemic ends. It’s in our hands.
