Brady Applauds Designation of Xavier Becerra, Vivek Murthy, as Nominees for Secretary of Health and Human Services, Surgeon General

Washington, D.C., December 7, 2020 – Today, Brady applauds President-elect Biden for selecting California Attorney General Xavier Becerra and former Surgeon General Vivek Murthy as designated nominees for Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and U.S. Surgeon General, respectively. These selections further demonstrate that President-elect Biden understands that addressing the pressing health challenges, including our longstanding gun violence epidemic, requires experienced leaders and experts who will listen to science and take a public health approach to keep our nation safe.

Brady President Kris Brown shared:

“Signaling the need to approach gun violence as a public health threat, President-elect Biden’s designation of California Attorney General Becerra and former Surgeon General Murthy as nominees for Secretary of Health and Human Services and Surgeon General is leadership in action. They will be ready to lead on day one and, just as importantly, understand that the federal government must take a public health approach to address the most pressing health challenges our country faces. To truly prevent gun violence, we must have leaders that have proven they believe in the application of this lens to America’s gun violence epidemic. Both Attorney General Becerra and Dr. Murthy have demonstrated that they understand this and will apply comprehensive solutions to prevent violence, not merely treat its symptoms.

Brady applauds the designation of Attorney General Xavier Becerra as nominee for U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services and of Dr. Vivek Murthy for U.S. Surgeon General. We look forward to working with them in less than 50 days.”

About Attorney General Becerra and Gun Violence Prevention:

From the California State Assembly, to the U.S. House of Representatives and as California’s Attorney General, Xavier Becerra has consistently championed common-sense gun violence prevention policies. As Attorney General, he has worked to strengthen California’s gun violence prevention laws, including supporting California’s first-in-the nation law requiring microstamping technology for all newly introduced semiautomatic pistols, and defending California’s constitutional ban on high capacity magazines in federal court. He will bring this same clarity of purpose to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, where he will apply the agency’s mission to enhance the health and well-being of all Americans to the on-going efforts to prevent gun violence. Brady looks forward to working with a Secretary Becerra in this fight.

About Former Surgeon General Murthy and Gun Violence Prevention:

Former Surgeon General Vivek Murthy has already shown that he will act in our nation’s best interest and address gun violence as a public health crisis. In fact, this well-regarded and scientifically-backed position drew extensive criticism from extremist interest groups such as the NRA during his prior term as U.S. Surgeon General. Despite this opposition, Dr. Murthy has never shied away from this position and we know he will not abandon it in a Biden Administration. Brady looks forward to once again working with a Surgeon General Murthy in this fight.
