Brady Center v. ATF - FOIA Lawsuits

On October 16, 2017 the Brady Center sued the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF) in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. The lawsuit was filed to require ATF to comply with two Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests by the Brady Center -- one from March 2017 regarding a controversial memo authored by a senior ATF official proposing to reduce federal gun regulations, and the other from August 2017 regarding ATF’s gun dealer inspection efforts and reports. Before the lawsuit, the ATF had failed to produce either set of documents. The case is ongoing, but in December 2017, a judge ordered the ATF to promptly produce the requested records and Brady continues to press for the agency’s full compliance with its statutory obligations.
