This is the moment, and our senators need to hear from us. We can't let up. Contact your senators now to urge them to swiftly support and pass this lifesaving legislation!

Washington, D.C., June 12, 2022 - Today, Brady urges the United States Senate to swiftly agree upon and pass needed gun violence prevention policies, following the announced bipartisan framework supported by 20 U.S. Senators. This framework is a historic achievement and leaves the Senate with a roadmap to pass the most comprehensive gun violence prevention policies in almost 30 years, since the Brady Bill established the Brady Background Check system.

Brady President Kris Brown shared:

“This framework is a 30-year breakthrough in the making. We applaud this historic step forward for gun violence prevention - one born out of the recognition that this nation needs change and action to save American lives from preventable gun violence. This is a historic, new beginning that breaks the stranglehold of the gun industry. The Senators of both parties, and particularly Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut, who have negotiated this common-sense framework deserve credit for listening to the demands of Americans across this nation and delivering a path forward for the Senate to pass legislation that helps to prevent the violence that kills over 100 Americans every single day and rips apart the fabric of our society.

This framework is laudable, but it is not the end of our effort. We will not rest until this framework becomes satisfactory legislation and President Biden signs that legislation into law, just as Jim and Sarah Brady accomplished with the signing of the Brady law 30 years ago. We can and will do it again. That is Brady’s history.

We urge every Senator to listen to their constituents and to vote to pass these meaningful policy changes into law. There is no time for complacency: the time is now and the moment is here. This is a historic initial breakthrough towards progress in our fight to prevent gun violence. We are encouraged to see leaders taking action, and not sides, and call on the legislature to finalize this package with the urgency that ending the epidemic of gun violence deserves.”

About the Senate's Bipartisan Gun Violence Prevention Agreement

The bipartisan framework makes critical reforms to prevent gun violence, including establishing a waiting period for purchases for individuals under 21 years old, closing the deadly so-called “boyfriend” loophole, strengthening requirements for gun sellers to obtain a federal firearms license, establishing clear penalties for straw purchases and gun trafficking, and more. The policies included in this framework are supported by the vast majority of Americans. They address easy access to firearms that too often results in tragedy and also invest in mental health solutions in communities across the country.

Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence. We work across Congress, the courts, and our communities with over 90 grassroots chapters, bringing together young and old, red and blue, and every shade of color to find common ground in common sense. In the spirit of our namesakes Jim and Sarah Brady, we have fought for over 45 years to take action, not sides, and we will not stop until this epidemic ends. It’s in our hands.
