Washington, D.C., January 22, 2022 – Last night a gunman opened fire and killed at least 10 people at a ballroom dance club in Monterey Park, Calif., a city near Los Angeles with a high Asian population. The shooting occurred around Lunar New Year celebrations and is already the third mass shooting in California in 2023.
Kris Brown, president of Brady, said:
“It is devastating to live in a country where we have to continually wake up to this horrific news. It is even more egregious that it has become normal for people to be gunned down in the middle of a joyous holiday celebration. There is no place in our country for hate-filled individuals to target others based on prejudice, bigotry and racism. Our deepest sympathies are with the families and individuals impacted by this senseless attack impacting the AAPI community.”
While details of the gun used and the shooters motivation are still unknown, Brady President Kris Brown is available for interview live, via phone, or Zoom, and can discuss:
The scope of gun violence prevention laws in California;
The prevalence of firearm-related hate crimes in the U.S.;
What Congress, state legislatures, and localities can do to reduce gun violence; and
The need and demand for a national assault weapons ban.
Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence. We work across Congress, the courts, and our communities with over 90 grassroots chapters, bringing together young and old, red and blue, and every shade of color to find common ground in common sense. In the spirit of our namesakes Jim and Sarah Brady, we have fought for over 45 years to take action, not sides, and we will not stop until this epidemic ends. It’s in our hands.
