In a Move That Puts Gun Lobby Profits Over People's Lives, the U.S. House Voted to Rescind a Life-Saving Regulation on "Stabilizing Braces," Which Turn Pistols Into Lethal and Illegal Short-Barreled Rifles. Make no Mistake, This Resolution Puts Us All in Danger of Increased Gun Violence and Mass Shootings.

Washington, D.C., June 13, 2023 – Today, the U.S. House of Representatives voted in support of a resolution that would nullify a recent Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) rule that ensured that pistols with attached "stabilizing braces" were properly regulated under the National Firearms Act. Brady, which helped drive more than 4,000 comments in support of this life-saving rule, released the following statement:

Kris Brown, president of Brady, said:

“For too long the gun industry has undermined laws regulating short-barreled rifles through the sale of accessories erroneously marketed as ‘stabilizing braces,’ and Brady is appalled at the U.S. House of Representatives’ reckless action to rescind this long overdue regulation.”
“Pistols fixed with such ‘stabilizing braces’ greatly enhance their lethality and make them appealing to mass shooters, as we unfortunately witnessed just a few months ago in Nashville. These accessories that turn pistols into short-barreled rifles should be subjected to the same regulations that govern the sale of similar firearms, including Brady Background Checks.
“We urge the U.S. Senate to reject this dangerous legislation.”

Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence. We work across Congress, the courts, and our communities with over 90 grassroots chapters, bringing together young and old, red and blue, and every shade of color to find common ground in common sense. In the spirit of our namesakes Jim and Sarah Brady, we have fought for over 45 years to take action, not sides, and we will not stop until this epidemic ends. It’s in our hands.
