Washington, D.C., April 15, 2021 - Today, Brady applauds New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy’s announced package of gun violence prevention policies and urges the New Jersey legislature to pass them without delay. These policies take a comprehensive, public health approach to preventing gun violence and will build upon New Jersey’s existing and extensive gun violence prevention laws.

Brady President Kris Brown shared:

“New Jersey is a national leader in gun violence prevention, with laws that help to stop gun violence in all of its forms. The package that Gov. Murphy announced today will make New Jersey’s gun violence prevention laws, which are already among the strongest in the nation, more robust and effective by addressing gun violence as a public health crisis. From increasing funding for violence intervention to requiring cutting-edge technology such as microstamping, these proposals will help keep communities safe and assist law enforcement to solve gun-related crimes. Governor Murphy has consistently championed a common-sense and comprehensive approach to preventing gun violence. Today’s announcement is further proof that he remains one of the strongest gun violence prevention champions to hold public office. His actions have helped to keep New Jerseyans safe and his proposal today will build upon that historic legacy to create a safer future for the entire state. Brady thanks Gov. Murphy for his leadership and urges the New Jersey legislature to pass these policies without delay.”

About Today’s Announcement:

Governor Murphy announced a package of 12 policies and proposals that would address the many forms and root causes of gun violence. The package includes calls for additional funding for gun violence intervention programs, which are evidence-based programs where staff work within communities to break cycles of violence and mediate conflict, as well as increased funding for New Jersey's Gun Violence Research Center at Rutgers University. Additional policies in the proposal include promoting microstamping technology, which assists law enforcement in analyzing crime scene data, and improving safety standards for gun permit licensing to help ensure that new gun owners receive the highest standard of resources and support when purchasing their firearm.

Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence. We work across Congress, the courts, and our communities with over 90 grassroots chapters, bringing together young and old, red and blue, and every shade of color to find common ground in common sense. In the spirit of our namesakes Jim and Sarah Brady, we have fought for over 45 years to take action, not sides, and we will not stop until this epidemic ends. It’s in our hands.
