Washington, D.C., June 12, 2020 - Today, Brady remembers the 49 people killed and 53 people injured in the mass shooting at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida, in the early morning of June 12, 2016. Four years later, the shooting remains the deadliest attack on LGBTQ+ Americans in U.S. history.Brady President Kris Brown shared:“Since the attack at Pulse Nightclub, at the time the largest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, tens of thousands of Americans have been killed by gun violence. In fact, since then our country has seen eight of the 26 deadliest mass shootings in its modern history. The violence and hate that resulted in the shooting at Pulse remain alive and well. That this event and its anniversary occur during Pride Month serves as a reminder that we must disarm hate in all of its forms. That this month is also Gun Violence Prevention month is a tragic reminder that we are still waiting for action to prevent more tragedies like this shooting. Those who were killed at Pulse were there dancing, celebrating and sharing their night with friends. No person should live in fear of gun violence and especially not while celebrating their identity and community. This attack targeted the LGBTQ+ community and the Latinx community, as those in attendance were celebrating ‘Latin Night’ and the majority of victims were Hispanic. In 2016, Brady joined with members of the Orlando community to grieve and remember the victims. We called for action that day and are still waiting for it. To mark this anniversary, we must recommit ourselves to vocally stand against hate, including homophobia, transphobia, and racism, and ensure that we continue to work to end gun violence.”
Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence. We work across Congress, the courts, and our communities with over 90 grassroots chapters, bringing together young and old, red and blue, and every shade of color to find common ground in common sense. In the spirit of our namesakes Jim and Sarah Brady, we have fought for over 45 years to take action, not sides, and we will not stop until this epidemic ends. It’s in our hands.
