Washington, D.C., August 8, 2019 - Brady is calling for immediate action to end America’s gun violence epidemic, but this solution is not for legislators. This solution is in our collective hands, and it’s called End Family Fire. Brady, in partnership with the Ad Council, launched the campaign to End Family Fire one year ago, on August 8, 2018. The date of launch and its anniversary signifies the 8 kids and teens unintentionally shot or killed every day by an unlocked and loaded gun in the home. Since the shooting in Gilroy, this would mean at least 10 children dead and another 70 injured by family fire - and most were entirely preventable! Yes, we need our legislators to act, but we also need to lead conversations about safe storage in the home to prevent these tragedies.

Since its launch, the campaign to End Family Fire has changed attitudes and behaviors about guns in the home and, engaged gun owners in unprecedented ways to create safer homes and communities. Surveys show a marked increase in public awareness of the issue, understanding of the term, and a growing willingness to take action.

  • 44% of gun-owning parents are aware of the End Family Fire campaign
  • Among gun-owning parents, there was a 5% decline in the perception that having a gun in the home makes the respondent and their family safer. Among all gun-owners, this perception declined from 55% to 52%.
  • 42% of those who recall seeing the ad reported that they’d talked to their family and friends about safe gun storage in the last 12 months — 23% higher than those who had reported not seeing the ad.

Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence. We work across Congress, the courts, and our communities with over 90 grassroots chapters, bringing together young and old, red and blue, and every shade of color to find common ground in common sense. In the spirit of our namesakes Jim and Sarah Brady, we have fought for over 45 years to take action, not sides, and we will not stop until this epidemic ends. It’s in our hands.
