Washington, D.C., September, 3, 2019 — Brady applauds Walmart’s announcement Tuesday that the company will discontinue all sales of handgun ammunition as well as ammunition for assault weapons. The decision came after Walmart witnessed two mass shootings at its stores in El Paso, Texas and Southaven, Mississippi this summer, as well as another high profile shooting in 2014.

Brady commends Walmart’s efforts and asks them to consider further action by refusing to sell guns produced by manufacturers of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, adopt the Brady Code of Conduct, stop contributions to candidates who are working on behalf of the NRA, and call on Congress to pass common-sense gun safety legislation.

Brady President Kris Brown stated,

“Walmart just acted faster than our elected officials in an effort to protect their customers, employees, and all communities throughout America. As one of the country’s largest retail companies and a major retailer of firearms, Walmart has shown how to take action, not sides, and implemented common-sense business practices that will prevent the senseless gun violence we’ve seen across the country. Walmart can show true leadership now as one of America’s retail giants and build on this commitment by involving its suppliers, shoppers and employees in being part of the solution.
Our elected leaders should take note- if a large corporation which profits from firearm and ammunition sales can take action to save lives, why can’t the very people elected to represent the American people and our safety? As the Senate makes their way back to Capitol Hill next week, people across the country will be watching and if our leaders refuse to change the laws, we’ll change the lawmakers.”

Walmart’s decision comes just weeks after the devastating shooting in El, Paso Texas that killed 22 people and injured more than 20 others. After the shooting, gun violence prevention advocates put pressure on the company to change its sales practices in order to ensure public safety from gun violence.

Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence. We work across Congress, the courts, and our communities with over 90 grassroots chapters, bringing together young and old, red and blue, and every shade of color to find common ground in common sense. In the spirit of our namesakes Jim and Sarah Brady, we have fought for over 45 years to take action, not sides, and we will not stop until this epidemic ends. It’s in our hands.
