Washington, D.C., March 24, 2021 - Following California Governor Gavin Newsom’s nomination of Assemblymember Rob Bonta to replace U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Beccerra as California Attorney General, Brady urges Asm. Bonta to make gun violence prevention his top priority beginning on day one.

Brady President Kris Brown shared:

“Assemblymember Bonta has already shown that he is a consistent champion for common-sense gun violence prevention policies. He will be an important ally in the effort to keep Californians safe. We urge Asm. Bonta to make preventing gun violence his number one priority on his first day. California continues to lead the country in enacting common-sense and evidence-based gun violence prevention policies, but it requires a knowledgeable and determined Attorney General to implement, enforce and defend them. Brady has every faith that Asm. Bonta will do so.”

Team ENOUGH California and Executive Councilmember Stephan Abrams shared:

“My generation has seen sustained gun violence across our nation, even as states like California have proactively implemented policies to address gun violence in all of its forms. While that leadership is why the gun homicide rate in California is 30 percent lower than the national rate among other metrics, we still need more action to help prevent gun violence in all of its forms. We are grateful to have a partner in Asm. Bonta who will work with us in this fight.”

Brady California Legislative Chair Amanda Wilcox shared:

“California’s strong gun laws have helped to reduce gun violence in our state, keeping families and communities safe. As Attorney General, Asm. Bonta will help to ensure that we continue to expend every effort to reduce gun violence and defend these common-sense policies against sustained and bad-faith attacks from the gun industry. Brady applauds Gov. Newsom’s selection today and we hope to work with Asm. Bonta in his new role as soon as the state Legislature has confirmed his appointment.”

Brady Program Manager Steve Lindley, the former Chief of the California Department of Justice’s Bureau of Firearms, shared:

“The next Attorney General must prioritize the effort to reduce and prevent gun violence in our state. Asm. Bonta will need to address growing threats such as the proliferation of untraceable ghost guns across our state and help to implement and enforce existing and common-sense measures to ensure that guns do not flow into our communities or into the hands of those who should not have them. We look forward to working with Asm. Bonta on these important efforts and to continuing to reduce gun violence in California.”

Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence. We work across Congress, the courts, and our communities with over 90 grassroots chapters, bringing together young and old, red and blue, and every shade of color to find common ground in common sense. In the spirit of our namesakes Jim and Sarah Brady, we have fought for over 45 years to take action, not sides, and we will not stop until this epidemic ends. It’s in our hands.
